For this study, Holmes preferred to "single out a
particular collection, making it the subject of a thorough investigation ... the
collection presenting the greatest advantages was that of the Academy of Natural
Sciences at Davenport, Iowa, which was, therefore, chosen. Other museums,
especially those at Cambridge, Saint Louis, and Washington, were rich in
material from this region, but none of these collections were so homogeneous and
satisfactory."
If you have a copy of Aboriginal Pottery of the Eastern
United States (another of our Archaeology titles) you may have noticed
credits for some of the beautiful pottery from the Davenport Academy of Natural
Sciences.
Gustav's Library is located in Davenport, Iowa and we are
especially pleased to make this valuable work available again.
