Part of the Prehistoric America series, this landmark work describes hundreds of effigy mounds in Wisconsin and the United States.  Authoritatively written, it also describes earthworks that have completely disappeared due to farming, erosion and modern construction (many had virtually disappeared by the time of publication).  Many hundreds of mounds are located and described as well as  discussions of the reasons they were built and the village sites associated with them. 

Peet contrasts and compares the Wisconsin mounds with examples from other states, including the Great Serpent Mound in Ohio and  a bone serpent path  in North Dakota that bears an uncanny resemblance to a serpent of standing stones in Abury, England.
