The classic instruction manual for
china painting, “Tried by Fire” was written in 1886 by Susan Stuart
Goodrich Frackelton (1851-1932), a leader in the American Arts and
Crafts Movement. Mrs. Frackelton was a native of Milwaukee,
Wisconsin and studied landscape painting under Henry Viandon. She
was most famous for her china painting, which demonstrated her
artistic training and observations of nature, and received numerous
medals of excellence from various expositions. This manual
describes, in detail, her methods for hand china decoration.
Soft cover, 8" x 10-1/2", 153, pages 12 color plates, profusely

Craft
of Hand-Made Rugs, Amy Mali Hicks (1914) |
A quality reprint of this
important work by Amy Mali Hicks (who is quite vocal in this book
concerning her distaste for the embellishment of the prior Victorian
period). This book covers an area often overlooked by other
discussions of the American Arts and Crafts Movement. Of particular
interest is her in-depth discussions concerning dyeing as it was
done in the early part of the twentieth century. She also discusses
the art of Batik (which surprises more than a few that it was a
popular technique of the Movement). If you are interested in the
arts of the Movement or just looking to accent your bungalow and
mission furniture authentically, this is the book for you.
Soft cover, 241 pages. $12.95

How to
Make Baskets, Mary White (1901) |
Everything you wanted to know
about how to make baskets in the Arts and Crafts style. This book
was first published in 1901 and is full of authentic instructions
for making some of the most interesting basketry items that are true
to their American Arts and Crafts Movement roots. One nice touch is
the inclusion of the chapter "What the basket means to the
(American) Indian" by Neltje Blanchan (1865-1918), a well known
author of the period who also wrote books on wild flowers and birds.
If you are interested in the manual arts of the Movement or just
looking to accent your bungalow with mission style authentically,
this book will be of special interest to you.
Soft cover, wire bound, 5-1/2" x 8", 219 pages, contains 15
chapters, 20 photographs and 47 figures. $8.95

When
Mother Lets Us Make Paper Box Furniture, G. E. Rich (1913) |
This
is a reprint of the original 1913 first edition of G. Ellingwood
Rich's book. The directions are a mixture of prose and verse
and the designs are simple yet somehow elegant. I was amazed when I
saw this book as it is Arts & Crafts Movement and Mission designs
through and through. The furniture peices are intended for a child
to make, but I think that a complete line of children's doll
furniture could be made from these illustrations as well.
Soft cover, 6"x 8", 111 page perfect bound book is printed on
smooth, heavyweight paper to best display the many diagrams and
illustrations. $8.95
