Kitecraft and Kite
Tournaments, Charles M. Miller (1911):
A reprint of the original, 1911 first edition of Charles M.
Miller's book. This isn't a subject that one sees very often
from this early period. It was published a mere 7 years after the
Wright Brothers first powered flight! This Manual Arts book
discusses model aeroplanes, hot air balloons, gliders and kites with
many designs that are definitely inspired by the Arts and Crafts
movement. The rubber band powered model airplanes are pretty
interesting and there are even geared ones that can use multiple
strands of rubber for longer flights. Hot air balloons are described
as well as gliders. All in all, this is quite an enjoyable and
instructive book and is quite scarce. There is also reference to the
Collins book on Model Aeroplanes (see our reprint, below).
Soft cover, 6" x 8", 144 page perfect bound book is printed on
smooth, heavyweight paper to best display the many diagrams and
illustrations. $14.95 |

Boys' Book of
Model Aeroplanes & Second Boy's Book of Model Aeroplanes (set of two
books), Arthur A. Collins (1910/11):
Without a doubt two of the most
intriguing books I have ever read on model airplanes. I had no idea
that models were being made in 1910 & 1911, just 6 years after the
Wright Brothers flight. This was the standard reference book about
constructing these model aircraft as evidenced by its being referenced in
Kitecraft and Kite Tournaments (another of our vintage reprints -
see above). Unbelievable amount of
illustrations for these very early works. If you are interested in
early flight and/or airplane modeling, this book
will certainly fit the bill. Volume I contains 308 pages, 18 chapters and 52 photographs
and illustrations, Volume II contains 262 pages, 16 chapters and 85
photographs and illustrations. A total of 570 pages and 132 illustrations, each volume is softbound and approximately 5-1/2" x
8". $24.95 (save $8.95
over individual price) |
